3 Delightful DIY Baby Changing Table Ideas

Talk to enough moms and you’ll learn that most traditional changing tables share two significant flaws: they take up too much space in small nurseries and they don’t grow with your baby (meaning you pretty much have a useless hunk of wood once your little one is out of diapers).

Well, as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. And, moms who need to maximize space and versatility will love these three delightful DIY baby changing table ideas:

1. Use a dresser. This is perhaps the easiest solution since most people already have a dresser. Simply pop a changing mat on top, convert drawers into diaper storage, and find other wall and tabletop organizing systems for all the other bits and pieces you need. Give an old piece of furniture a new life in your nursery with a fresh coat of non-toxic**paint. Here’s a lovely example from Emily McCall on Houzz.com.

**Conforms to ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation and respiratory effects.

2. Adapt other storage and shelving systems. With a little more DIY chops, you can alter other pieces of furniture into a unique, versatile changing table like this one from Project: Project. They used the Trofast system from Ikea (the stair-step piece and the single unit) and attached a fleece-covered piece of wood 1" larger than the changing table pad to the top. Clever!

3. Make a fold-out. You see them in almost every public restroom, so how about building one in your nursery? This fold- out was designed by Little Crown Interiors and was a part of an incredibly elegant nursery showcased in Project Nursery.
