Do I Need A Primer?
Some colors, especially yellows, reds and oranges, and other dark accent colors, are considered by the paint industry to be “poor hiding” colors. That means they usually need a primer because, despite their strong, vibrant color, they’re not good at hiding the color they’re covering.
Using a grey or tinted primer can help you avoid having to apply multiple coats of paint to get the color you want. A tinted primer will help prepare the existing surface for your color. After that, you’ll typically only need to apply two coats of paint to get that perfect result.
At ECOS, we can help you tell which colors need a primer. Click here to print a zig-zag patterned paint card you can use to test your paint sample. Apply two coats of paint over the pattern. If you can still see the pattern through the paint, you’ll get better results if you use a grey or tinted primer under your color.
Painting Tips to Improve “Hide"
- Always choose a high-quality paint like ECOS.
- If you have multiple cans of the same color, combine them before you start to paint.
- Always stir paint thoroughly before painting.
- Don’t thin or dilute the paint with water.
- Use the correct primer as described above, or when you’re applying paint over a porous surface.
- Don’t spread the paint too thinly or unevenly.
- Allow the recommended drying time between coats.
- Always use high-quality brushes, rollers, and other tools.

|Preparation||Good surface preparation is vital for the perfect finish. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free from any dirt, dust, grease, glue, flaking pieces, or contaminants. Repair any cracks, holes, or imperfections. Sand the wood in the direction of the grain to obtain a smooth uniform surface. First use a medium-grade sandpaper (#120) working your way to fine-grade sandpaper (#220). Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove all sanding dust, and let dry thoroughly before applying the varnish. Always spot test on an inconspicuous area to ensure satisfactory results and color.|
|Application and Clean Up||Stir thoroughly before and during use to eliminate any settling. Do not shake. Do not thin. Do not apply in temperatures below 50oF. Dries to the touch in 30 to 60 minutes. Recommended wait time between coats is 2 to 4 hours. High humidity and cool temperatures may result in longer dry and recoat times. Clean application tools with warm soapy water. When working with more than one can, we recommend mixing together the contents of the cans to ensure color consistency. Apply stain in the direction of the wood grain using a clean, lint-free cloth, high quality synthetic bristle brush, a foam brush, or lamb’s wool applicator (for floors). Maintain a wet edge. Allow the stain to penetrate for no more than three minutes. Once the stain has been applied go over the same section with a clean lint-free cloth to remove any excess stain for an even color tone, wiping in the direction of the grain with an even pressure. Do not allow stain that has not penetrated the wood to dry on the surface. Any uneven color penetration can be blended. Rewet the surface with more stain and lightly rub the stain into the surface, blending light and dark areas. To darken color, apply a second coat after two hours, repeating the directions for application of the first coat. Do not sand between coats. After a minimum of three hours (dry time may be extended due to heavy application, low temperatures or high humidity), complete your project by applying a protective finish of ECOS WoodShield Varnish. For porous woods (such as Pine) apply WoodShield Wood Conditioner and allow to soak in for five minutes. This will help to ensure even stain color and reduce grain raising on soft and hard woods. Remove any excess Wood Conditioner with a clean cloth. For best results, wait 15-30 minutes before lightly sanding the surface with a fine-grade sandpaper. This will help smooth any raised grain. Remove all sanding dust.|
