Kitchen cabinets are more than a way to store your family’s plates and cups. They play a huge role in your kitchen’s color scheme and, thus, its overall aesthetic. Sometimes, the quickest way to transform a kitchen is to figure out how to give your cabinets a facelift. Fortunately, this task is made easy with these tips.

Refinish or Repaint Them

The easiest way to give your cabinet a facelift is to change its color, which you can do by either repainting or refinishing them. Keep these concepts in mind when picking your paint or varnish color:

  • If you’re redoing your whole kitchen, choose the cabinet color last.
  • Keep the color of the countertop, walls, backsplash, appliances, and flooring in mind when you choose a paint color.
  • Think about how much natural lighting your kitchen is going to get.
  • Consider the style of cabinets. Traditional cabinets may look better with more traditional colors.
  • Remember that colors will look better in a higher gloss.

When you have selected your color, you can follow a similar process for both repainting and refinishing the cabinets. Thoroughly wash any oil, dirt, or food grease off the cabinets. Then, gently sand the surface, apply a primer, and apply the first coat of paint once the primer has dried. We recommend using two coats of paint and removing the doors to paint them for the sake of ease.

Remove the Doors

Open shelving turns your plates and cups into decorative pieces. But you don’t have to knock out your cabinets to achieve this look. All you have to do is remove your cabinet doors and apply a coat of paint both inside and outside the cabinet using the same strategies we have already mentioned. A black interior lends itself to a sleek, modern kitchen. Or, if you want a more rustic look, apply one of our odorless* varnishes to bring out the cabinet’s natural wood color.

Replace the Handles

There are far more cabinet handle options than you would think, and they can each change a cabinet’s aesthetic. There are two primary categories of cabinet handles: round knobs and long pulls, with dozens of subcategories of each. Knobs are often associated with a more traditional look, while pulls are more modern. You can also mix and match both for a midcentury modern look.

Transforming your cabinets transforms the entire kitchen. Whatever look you choose for your kitchen, you can rely on ECOS Paints to meet your decorative needs.

*Odorless - No traditional paint (polyurethane) odor, which can cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues.
