Painting the exterior of your home is a big job, and not something that you’ll do very often, so picking the right colors can be a bit daunting. The best way to make sure you love how your house looks after it’s painted is to do a lot of research. Another great way to find the right colors for your house is to look around the town you live in. Sometimes seeing it in person is the only way you can feel confident that it will look great on your house.

Once you choose your color, consider these tips to try to make your makeover more eco-friendly:

• If your home was built before 1978, there’s a good chance you have a layer of lead paint in there somewhere. Lead is extremely toxic (which is why it’s banned now), so test for it and call in help if needed.

• If your project takes more than a day, don’t clean your brushes and rollers at the end of the day. Save the water and just wrap them tightly in plastic grocery bags to keep them moist. (Note: Keep them stored out of direct sunlight.)
• When you’re done and ready to clean out rollers and brushes, conserve water by scraping out all the paint that you can with a stir stick or similar tool. The more you can manually squeeze out, the less water you’ll need to wash it clean.
