What is Organic Paint?

Do you buy organic foods? Organic body care products? How about organic cotton? Whatever your organic priorities are, you might be wondering what organic paints are. How can paints possibly be organic? Well, like many marketing terms, there’s actually not a standard, regulated definition or certification program for organic paints in the U.S. Still, at ECOS Paints, we have a strong commitment to organic paints and today we're sharing what it means to us.

At ECOS Paints, our use of the term "organic paint" is based in part on the fact that our company originated in the U.K. where this terminology is more common.  Here's what it means to us:

• All ECOS Paints products are free of pesticides, free of herbicides, free of fungicides, and non-toxic*. In fact, ECOS Paints are so non-toxic* that our founder ate a spoonful chosen at random by the U.K.’s Health and Safety Executive to prove his point. (Note: We certainly do not recommend eating our paints.)  That’s what we mean when we say “organic paints.”
  *Conforms to ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation and respiratory effects.
