Think making a wooden toy is too tough for you? Think again. Kids in middle school tackle woodworking in shop class, so you can do it, too. Not only are homemade wooden toys gifts from the heart, they're also better for the planet since wood is a natural, renewable resource. Ready to try your hand at this DIY? Here are over 100 wooden toys almost anyone can make.

There are so many options, right? Some are going to be super easy and others are going to take a higher skill level to make them. Whichever direction you choose, here are some basic tips to keep in mind.

  • Make it Kid-Safe. This is an obvious tip, but consider the different dangers. Make sure you don’t leave any sharp, pointy edges. Sand the toy well to make sure it’s nice and smooth. If there are any small pieces attached, make sure they are secure and can’t be pulled off.
  • Use Safe Finishes. Toys often end up in kid’s mouths, so use non-toxic paints, stains, and sealants. Lullaby Paints are the perfect non-toxic* option for painting the toys fun colors. Our brother company, ECOS Paints, has non-toxic* stains and varnishes if you want a more natural look. *Conforms to ASTMD-4236, specifically concerning oral toxicity, skin irritation and respiratory effects.
  • Work Safe. Whenever power tools are necessary for completing a project your mantra should be, Safety First! Wear eye protection. Work in a tidy space. Take off jewelry. Wear ear protection. Make sure the room is well-lit. And don’t rush! Accidents often happen when people are trying to go too fast.
