The Dos and Don’ts of Designing a Nursery

Do you have a baby on the way? Then you probably have a lot of tasks and to-dos on your plate—one big one being the nursery. Designing a nursery can be fun and rewarding, but it can also be quite daunting, especially if you’re not sure how to start. Some aspects of nursery design work better than others, ensuring a happy and healthy baby. Here are some of the most important dos and don’ts of designing a nursery. Check them out, and then get started!

The Dos

Do: Pick a Color Palette First

There are so many colors in the world, and that can get overwhelming. Before you start delving into design, make sure you choose a color palette to stick to. We also suggest picking out your textiles before you choose the paint—matching paint is much easier than finding the perfect curtain shade.

Do: Identify a Focus

What will be the room’s focal point? If you’re not sure, then now’s the time to figure that out. Every room needs a focused center—otherwise, the room can seem off-kilter. Most people decide to center their nurseries around the crib, but you could choose to focus on a large window, a painted dresser, or an intricate rocking chair.

Do: Go Green

Choosing sustainable and non-toxic options are especially important for your baby's space.  Pick baby-friendly paints, choose reclaimed furniture pieces over brand-new ones, use natural light, and choose products that put the planet first. Eco-friendliness isn’t just good for the planet—it’s essential for your baby, too.

Do: Focus on Organization

If the nursery is a mess, the baby will sense it. Keying in on an organization method will make it easier on both of you. We suggest setting up different stations so that you know where everything goes and so that everything has its own space—for example, you could implement a sanitation station for cleaning up, a nursing station, a clothing station, and whatever else you need to establish organization.

The Don’ts

Don’t: Forget to Decorate the Ceiling

Your baby is going to be staring at the ceiling a lot, so make it something to look at! Paint it a soothing color, add some glow-in-the-dark stars—whatever you choose.

Don’t: Use Harsh Lighting

Lighting plays a big role in the nursery, so make sure you avoid harsh fluorescents. If you can, install a dimmer on overhead fixtures to protect your baby’s eyes and to soothe the space. You could also only use natural lighting and accent lamps to give a cozy glow to the room.

Now it’s time to start! Don’t put off nursery design; the sooner you start, the easier it will be for you. If you want a green space, start researching now to find that perfect reclaimed wooden crib.
