In a 2017 interior design trends survey, more than a third of respondents said they would choose a neutral color palette if redecorating their home, but regardless of the colors you plan to add to your walls or furniture, knowing how to carry out the painting project correctly is vital to the end result. This is particularly true when it comes to primers. Here are just a few mistakes to avoid when working with primer.

Not Applying Enough Primer

It can be hard to determine exactly how much primer to use, but many people aren't using enough. When applying primer, be sure to let it dry thoroughly between coats, and when it doubt, it's typically better to have too much primer than not enough. The paint you're using may also contain more thorough instructions about how to apply primer and when to use a primer. ECOS Paints has a test process - Do I need a Primer? Do I need a Primer

Not Tinting Your Primer

Tinting your primer is a bit of an advanced tip, but those who aren't doing it may be missing out on even more professional-looking and vibrant results. The process is very simple and can be done in just a few minutes

"Add a bit of your paint color to the primer to tint it -- and you can get away with fewer coats. White is one of the hardest colors to cover, so having your primer tinted will save you time and money!" says Hey Lets Make Stuff.

Not Considering Eco Friendly Primer

VOC awareness has risen in recent years, and fortunately, homeowners now have countless choices when it comes to choosing a primer that's free of harmful toxins. In fact, in a recent study, participants spent six full work days in an environmentally-controlled office space at the TIEQ lab at the Syracuse Center of Excellence. In this space, VOC levels were reduced to approximately 50 micrograms per cubic meter and 40 cubic feet per minute of outdoor air per person. They found that, on average, cognitive scores were 101% higher than in conventional workspaces. That being said, it's always ideal to choose a primer that's known to be safe for the environment and personal health.

Ultimately, avoiding these mistakes can lead to a better painting project and a healthier home. For more information about low VOC paints, wood primers, or eco friendly primers, contact Ecos Paints.
