Everything You Need to Know About Using Paint Primer

In the world of DIY interior design, a lot is said about paint. What are the best types of paints? How do we choose the best colors? But less time is spent discussing paint primer. This is unfortunate because, without a solid foundation of primer, much of the conversation about painting becomes irrelevant. Fortunately, we have everything you need to know about using paint primer to help your paint job be a success.

What Is Primer?

Simply put, primer is a paint-like substance designed to seal a wall before paint is applied. Most surfaces that we go to paint are porous to some extent. If we apply paint directly to these surfaces, they absorb the paint. This requires the painter to apply more coats to get the desired finish. Along with that, applying a primer allows the paint to better adhere to the surface, which ensures better durability for the final paint job. It also keeps previous colors or textures from showing through.

When You Should Apply Primer

Bare surfaces such as dry wood or brick are most in need of sealing. These surfaces should be primed before painting. Even if a surface has been previously painted, damaged paint may show through in your final paint job if you try to paint over it without primer. Finally, if you are trying to repaint a surface that is a darker color than the paint you want to use, a primer will help ensure the paint job comes out the color you want it. This is true both of walls and furniture pieces, doors, or railings you paint.

When You Don’t Need Primer

As helpful as primer is, there are times when applying it isn’t necessary. If the wall has been previously painted with the same type of paint you are currently using, and the paint is in good condition, you should be able to skip the primer. Keep in mind that the paints should be the same type and a similar color. If you previously used oil-based paint, you won’t be able to apply a water-based paint on top of it without a primer. The same is true when switching from a higher gloss finish to a flatter finish.

Applying Primer

If you know how to apply paint, you already have everything you need to know about applying primer to a surface. Be sure that the surfaces are completely clean and fill in any holes before starting. For rough spaces, use sandpaper or sanding blocks to get a smooth surface. If you are painting walls, start by applying a several inch band of paint around the corners of the walls with a hand brush. Then, apply the paint with a roller in sections until the wall is completely covered. Wait until the primer is completely dry before adding paint.

A good primer is essential to a perfect paint job. Here at ECOS Paints, we have a variety of zero-VOC* primers for every painting scenario.
