Consumers expect to know what ingredients are contained in the foods that they eat, so that they can make informed, healthy choices. In the same way, we believe the construction industry needs to know what chemicals are used in the materials they specify.

Building materials result in immediate, ongoing, and legacy impacts to the environment. Initially there are production, transportation and contruction factors; followed by human health effects within the built environment, and finally the disposal, recycling and landfill consequences.

Today, architects, specifiers, contractors, and owners are taking responsibility for their impact on the environment. This includes designing healthy spaces, conserving resources, and choosing sustainable materials.

In support of this progress, ECOS has engaged with three market leading organizations to provide the highest standard in material transparency.

The Health Product Declaration
The HPD Open Standard provides a consistent, and transparent format to accurately disclose the material contents, and associated health information of a building product.

Declare Labels
Declare labels are issued to products disclosing ingredient inventory, sourcing and end of life options. Declare labels are based on the Manufacturers Guide to Declare, administered by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).

SM Material Health Overview™
Presents material health information in a standardized format, designed to allow users to easily find the information they need. For example: What is the product made of? Are there any hazardous ingredients? If yes, how bad are they? Are there any exposure concerns?

ECOS has produced the first SM Material Health Overview™ for coatings (details here). Our transparency enables informed decision making, a true environmental impact assessment, and a real opportunity for sustainable building.
